History
Established in September 1941 in the Western Desert of North Africa, the British 8th Army became one of the most renowned Allied forces of World War II. Initially led by General Alan Cunningham and later by the famed Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, the 8th Army participated in some of the war's most critical campaigns across the harsh landscapes of Libya and Egypt.
The 8th Army's most significant victory occurred at the Second Battle of El Alamein in October 1942, where Montgomery's troops decisively overcame Rommel's Afrika Korps. This success marked a pivotal moment in the North African campaign and the broader war, with Churchill famously stating, "Before Alamein, we never had a victory. After Alamein, we never had a defeat."
Composed of British, Australian, New Zealand, Indian, South African, and Free French forces, the 8th Army was a truly multinational unit. The soldiers earned the nickname "The Desert Rats" after the 7th Armoured Division's insignia, featuring a jerboa-a desert rodent native to North Africa. Operating under extreme conditions with temperatures exceeding 40°C and frequent sandstorms, these men demonstrated exceptional endurance and courage.
After their successes in North Africa, the 8th Army proceeded to invade Sicily and Italy in 1943, advancing up the Italian peninsula in some of the war's most challenging infantry battles. The formation remained active until the final German surrender in May 1945, having travelled further and fought longer than nearly any other Allied army during the conflict.
