Starting in Airsoft...

Simple guide to starting in airsoft.

So your getting into airsoft, and your looking at everything and want to buy it all.

         Slow down.....

Big mistake for those starting in airsoft is they buy a lot of stuff they won't use that much. Do some research and ask other airsofters and local shops for info on products. It's too easy to buy online and not know the quality or if the product will do what you think it will. Buy what you need to start, get out playing, talk to players and go from there.

You don't need all the kit to start playing:

You don't have to have a camo uniform, vest, etc. To start what you need is

Good eye protection, try out a few in your local shop and see what guys are using at your local site. Some people go for full face, its down to you what you find comfortable. some sites do require full face protection. which means a full face mask or glasses / goggles and a lower face mask.

High boots, that are laced up to the top, you need the ankle support to reduce injury.

Clothing to suit the terrain and weather. Green and brown clothing if your outdoor, darker clothing for indoor, but it does depend on the environment your in. You don't have to get camo starting off.

Quality bbs, don't buy the cheapest ones. If they are under €10 for 5000 then there is a possibility they are not great and could cause a jam and damage the internals of your gun. Always watch out for a seam around the bb. they should be perfectly smooth, and polished.

Get a good quality gun, Cyma & JG do very durable and low cost start guns. get something that you will be able to carry for the day. Starting in to Airsoft with a sniper is not a good idea. It takes time to learn to be a good fast shot, your up against full auto guns. It also takes time to be stealthy.

A fully charged 1600mAh battery for your rifle, yes a lot of people forget to charge there battery after practicing they moves in the back garden :)

Wear something on your head, baseball cap etc.

Bring some food and water. don't eat too or drink much, at the start of the day or between games. it won't mix will if your doing a lot of running around.

once you have all of the above your ready for your first game of airsoft. Remember also if you don't have a gun or mask, most sites do a rental pack that includes Gun, mag, bbs and mask. but these normally have to be booked in advance.

When buying more gear, talk to other players, look at their gear. best advice will come from those experienced players. Just because something is expensive or looks good, does not mean its good or suitable for you.

Below are some Quick tips & info for when you start airsoft. These are written so anyone can understand. We will add more to this, so check back regularly.

Only use silicone oil and Silicone grease on your airsoft replicas.

Don't over wind mags, play it safe on give it about 15 winds

You shouldn't need to have your hop up turned on full. if you do then there's an problem with it.

The Batteries and charger that often come with guns in the box are usually 1100 to 1200 mAh and the charger is a 250 to 300 mAh charger. Divide the charger mAh in to the battery to get the charging time. 1200 divided by 300 give 4 Hours charge.

Do not leave it plugged in overnight. Plug it into a timer if you think you may forget and set the charge time.

The battery that came with your gun ( if its the 1000 to 1200 mAh) will not last all day gaming, and is for when you get the gun you can do some shooting. It is not going to last with regular repeat use and the charger is very slow. On average most players only need a 1600mAh battery. Make sure your get a good brand, and a Smart charger , which will detect the level left in the battery and charge it, when full it stops charging. standard chargers that you get with your gun do not do this.

Your rifle is not a walking stick or a seat. never put the muzzle into the ground or water. blocking the barrel will cause internal problem as the bbs and air can not get out.

Boots are very important and you should have them from your first day. High boots, tied up properly to the top. this gives support and helps reduce injury.

before you go to a skirmish site look up there website and check out there site rules. some sites will have different rules, like lower face mask must be worn, or rules on grenades, head shots etc. There is a briefing at the start of the day that explains this but look at them first yourself so you know before going.

being great on shooter games etc, does not mean anything when it comes to playing on an airsoft field.

After a days gaming, clean your airsoft replicas, silicone oil on your pistols, and wipe down your AEG, and don't forget to clean the barrels.

Don't wear bright coloured clothing.... you will be a target. Dark colours or brown and greens. You don't have to buy new camo to play, take your time building your gear. check out what brands and camo patterns work best where you play.

Don't be a Rambo and jump out from cover firing off a whole mag ( know as the 300 round burst) you will be hit within seconds. The good guys never get hit in the films or need to reload, well most of the time. Be tactical, give the smallest target to the enemy as possible.

Remember the "Blind Fire". this is common with new players. Don't stick your gun up over cover, out to the side or through small holes and just fire, you must be looking down your gun when firing.

Those who are new to Airsoft or just doing a bit of target shooting in their garden are usually directed to the law governing Airsoft. But there are those who get a Airsoft Replica and don't know. Every country has a law in some same or form. In Ireland it falls under the firearms section. The information in the firearms section can be hard to follow so we have simplified it for you below. Airsoft guns are legal in Ireland since the 2006 Criminal Justice Act. Airsoft guns are classed as

Not so long back, i picked up an Evolution Carbontech Combat Series EC21AR Recon S 10" from Waterford Airsoft Supplies for a tidy sum €200, and i must say im quite impressed. More than quite. I'm VERY impressed. There are many replicas that perform well out of the box, but i'm liking this one. I really am liking this one!

So there is an unboxing video, and between a rather slow editing programme, and an even slower editor (me), that's going to come after this post at some point in a long to be forgotten future...fine....soon....ish...

There is also a bit of footage of me gaming with it, scoring some epic kills, and potentially causing some massive head trauma to myself, but i'll refer you back to the start of this paragraph. The clip is quite funny, i may post that separately.

          Anyway...

In a nutshell, out if the box, this replica is lightweight. Compared to a G&G Firehawk light weight i mean, and that's light as well as short. Stock and receivers are made of a durable polymer, and it is strong. Over the last month iv gamed, dropped, and even thrown (don't ask) this replica, and its stood up to abuse. The keymod rail *feels* like aluminium but if its polymer its damn strong!

Overall, this is one solid built and sturdy AEG! For the price, your getting the equivalent of a G&G, ICS, and Specna Arms. Hell, as much as i detest Ares, the externals are good and the Evolution's are more than a challenge to them too. There are no creaks or rattles from this replica!

So what have i done with this prior to my first game? Well i did what i normally do and cleaned the barrel and bucking. Was pleasantly surprised to see this comes with a brass Ø6.01mm barrel as standard with a rotary hopup. Give a nice consistent power output as a result, and the hopup hasn't budged one in the middle of a game. There was a slight squeal from the gearbox, but a slight adjustment of the motor fixed that. Only big change i did was changing the connector from small tamiya to deans as all my lipo's run deans connectors.

External attachments, i opted for an ACOG style Red Dot and fore grip. Side note, the rail segments also came in the box.

First run was this RIF was in the shooting range. I used 0.28g bbs and ran it on an 11.1 lipo. My idea is i want to run this gun hard and fast just to see what punishment it can take, and 11.1s can do this very easily. Gearboxes need tuning to take the speed of the increased voltage, and the trigger contacts need a mosfet to stop them getting burnt out. This replica took it in its stride. I spammed semi, mag dumped, reloaded, and did it all again. Admittedly my lipo was at half a charge and ran out half as soon as i wanted, but i got enough practice with it to have confidence fielding it in a game with accuracy. To top it off, that red dot is absolutely bang on the money. If its on it, i know i will hit it.

First game on site was a blast. Range test, i was hitting 200ft easily and with some decent accuracy too with 0.28g G&G BBs. Since then this gun has had semi spammed, mag dumped, dropped, thrown (again, don't ask) dropped again, and has pretty much hit anything iv pointed and pulled the trigger on. After three days games it has beaten my ICS Komodo for longevity (since the ICS decided to blow its gears up after some rather light use by comparison after 3 days i might add), and four game days in it is still a solid a reliable performer!

I'm really starting to like this AEG!

My plan is to run this AEG hard, see what it takes to make it break, and then build it into a BB Death Dealer it deserves to be. Going by its current traits i may be waiting a while. Maybe i should up the challenge to a 14.8v lipo and give it a proper run for its money? Either way, i have a lovely Evolution ETU ready to install the moment it fails, and start rebuilding this "Beginners Beast"... Actually, that suits it pretty well!
